So I just had a fun little LJ moment. I posted a question on a genealogy LJ group, and a gay genealogy guy from Phoenix responded asking to friend me. For those not in the know, genealogists tend to be little grey-haired ladies and gents in the geriatric set. When not part of that set, they tend to be part of the Mormon church. Not to generalize overmuch, but neither of those groups tend to like gay bois. So, it is especially fun to meet another young gay genealogy geek. So, if you get a second, check out Jason's LJ. http://gervasius.livejournal.com/

Gay genealogy

Hi. Meet yet another gay genealogist. I must admit I was surprised to see Gervasius' post, and now yours as well. While none of my genealogy friends are little old ladies, much less mormons, I think I was the only gay one in the lot (should have known better, I suppose.)
Anyway, one of my dreams is to develop some sort of gay methodology for genealogists. Naturally I wonder how many of my ancestors, or relatives, were gay - or the contemporary equivalent thereof - and the only resource I can think of is to check old newspapers, and possibly court records, for sodomy arrests.
Any thoughts?

Re: Gay genealogy

For verification purposes, I think you may be right. I can tell you that my grandmother told me that her brother was gay, and it later turend out that my grandfather's brother was gay as well. I have met 2 second cousins who are gay/lesbian, so it seems to run in my family. Additionally I tend to track unmarried siblings as that tends to be indicative, but not absolute. I really don't focus much on the gay/lesbian connections though, as I am interested in the fmaily history overall. I hope that helps, and nice to meet you!

Re: Gay genealogy

So, are you from PA? If so, whereabouts? I am in Michigan, but was born in Beaver Co., PA.

Re: Gay genealogy

Oh, I'm from South Jersey. My family has been in the Philadelphia area for 150+ years. This fact has made it fairly easy to look up the relevant documents, since center city Philadelphia is less than a 20 minute drive. Also, I had an uncle and a great Aunt who really started it all, so all I needed to do was clarify and confirm previous statments, which were for the most part, correct.
My parents moved to New Jersey in '55, six years before I was born.

Re: Gay genealogy

So, may I add you to my friends list? I don't tend to blog much, but if you care to, you may add me.
